Pyramid Patrol is a sci-fi FMV-based rail-shooter developed by Taito (along with High Tech Laboratory Japan) and published by Taito (along with Pioneer) for the Pioneer LaserActive (using the SCD-based Mega LD PAC module) as a launch title in both Japan (on August 20, 1993) and North America (on September 13, 1993). Set in the future year of 2035, the story involves a Golden Statue deep inside a pyramid-shaped ruin on Mars (Location), whose disruption from an expedition triggered a hibernating race of Atlanteans to wake up and begin their invasion of Earth. Players guide a Cyglod PMFXT05 space fighter as they infiltrate the now-fortified pyramid in an effort to return the statue to its original location. Similar to other FMV-based space shooters at the time, the overall action is presented as hand-drawn sprites while the scenery is presented as a pre-rendered full-motion video with 3DCG graphics. The game involves moving the crosshair around and shooting at enemies, with some of the action makes use of the FMV itself (such as boss battles). Footage for the game originated as part for a non-interactive virtual ride making use of Taito's Super D³ BOS ("Super Dynamic Direct Dimension Burst Out System") 360-degree full-body motion enclosure. The game later received a remake for the 3DO (Platform) on August 11, 1995, released exclusively in Japan as Pyramid Intruder. While the story remains the same and the game makes use of full-motion video, the game is now set in third-person, with the player moving around the ship instead of a cursor (similar to Star Wars: Rebel Assault). In addition, most of the FMV has been reworked, with several new scenes added.
