Overview

Override, also known as Last Battalion, is a vertical shoot 'em up with a sci-fi setting that sees brave pilot Kein/Kain Asagiri take on the alien forces that have attacked planet Uranos in his combat hover tank Gigaiasu. The game was initially released on the PC Engine in the January of 1991 and adapted with additional scenes for the Sharp X68000 home computer in the November of that year, where its name was changed to Last Battalion. The PC Engine version of the game was added to the Wii's Virtual Console in 2007 for Japan only.

Gameplay

The goal of the game is to reach the end of each stage, where the player must fight the boss to progress. The game has six stages in total of increasing difficulty. The game adopts a power-up system common to the genre, though the game separates them into several types:

"P": These red circular power-ups which feature a "P" increase the strength of the ship's main weapon, which eventually branches to a wider spreadshot with more bullets as more "P"s are collected.
"E": Increases the Gigaiasu's shields. Resembles the "P" power-up, only it's blue and has an "E" instead. The player begins with three shield blocks, and is vulnerable to a one-shot kill once all three are depleted. The E-Up power-ups restore those shield blocks, but are fairly rare.

The game also has five "options" - additional weapons that increase the coverage of the player's weapons in differing ways. Collecting the same colored option multiple times increases its strength. Collecting another colored option drops the player down to the basic model of that particular color.

Red: Adds two cannons that fire diagonally up and away from the Gigaiasu in both directions. When fully upgraded, the bullets turn into homing rings.
Yellow: Adds cannons that fire in the opposite direction the player is moving. Best used for enemies that pursue the player.
Green: Adds cannons that spin around the player, adding to their forward firepower. Best used for bosses for the concentrated fire it supplies.
Blue: Adds cannons that follow the player's craft, firing upwards with strong lasers. The effect is maximized if the player moves around a lot.
Purple: Adds cannons on either side of the Gigaiasu, allowing the player to take out enemies on the same horizontal level.
