Plot

In Edo-era Japan, master duelist Miyamoto Musashi wins a duel against Yoshioka Seijuro, head of the Yoshioka-ryu school. As he escapes from Yoshioka's vengeful students, Musashi stumbles across another rival swordsman, Sasaki Genryu. However, before the two of them can fight, both are attacked by monsters called Genma and killed. Musashi awakens in Hell, where a man in white attaches a mystical gauntlet to his arm that allows Musashi to return to the mortal world and gives him the power to kill the attacking Genma. However, a femme voice tells Musashi that if he tries to remove the gauntlet, he will die.

With few other options, Musashi follows the gauntlet's words to track down Ono no Takamura, and his apprentice Izumo no Okami, both sheltering at a nearby temple. Takamura reveals a gauntlet of his own, and tells Musashi that he has been chosen as an "Onimusha," a warrior chosen by the Oni to guard the gate between the earth and Hell and to stop the Genma who are escaping into their world through rifts in the gate.

Gameplay

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a third-person action game. Players control Musashi and most of his actions are done with a single sword as he fights rival swordsmen, demons, and other enemies in-between. In addition to various attacks, Musashi can use his sword to guard against attacks, or use a well-timed guard to parry and redirect enemy attacks to either side of himself before counter-attacking. Some attacks cannot be blocked or parried, but can be dodged with a different well-timed button press, allowing Musashi to get a free hit in before the enemy recovers. All enemies have stamina bars that are depleted with each strike or parry against them, and when their stamina is fully depleted, Musashi can use a "Break Issen" move to instantly kill standard enemies, or take a chunk of health from bosses.

Later on, Musashi will be able to use a bow with chargeable arrows, which allows him to shoot down flying enemies or interrupt their skills.
