Merlin Racing is a kart racing game developed by Miracle Designs and published by VM Labs for the NUON (Platform) on December 2000. The sole racing game for the short-lived NUON platform and a spiritual successor to the studio's 1995 game Atari Karts (Game), Merlin Racing looks and plays similar to Rare's 1997 N64 game Diddy Kong Racing (Game), with cute animal racers, a single-player campaign (with a drivable hub world), and access to three different types of vehicles (karts for road tracks, boats for water tracks, and hovercraft for aerial tracks). The game's story is set in the land of Camelot (Location), with one of several cute creatures racing to rescue the captured magician Merlin (Character) from the wicked witch Prava by winning the four Zystral Crystals from their guardians and beating Prava in a race. The game was later ported to the PlayStation (Platform) in 2003 with four split releases, each corresponding to one of the three different types of vehicles: both Rascal Racers (Game) and ATV Racers (Game) for kart racing, XS Airboat Racing (Game) for boat racing, and Miracle Space Race (Game) for hover racing.
The game includes 10 playable characters from the start, 5 unlockable boss characters, and 1 unlockable character via cheat code. Each of them have their own unique stats according to the manual, none of which are listed in-game.
