The Champion of the Universe has destroyed multiple worlds he considers "unworthy" of his challenge, including Shi'ar, and has now set his sights on Earth. To this end, he has sent a Promoter to Earth to organize a tournament where teams of 4 heroes or villains will fight each other for the right to challenge The Champion himself, and save Earth from destruction.
Each match is a 4v4 tag fighter where each player seeks to deplete the other side's health bar (Vital Gauge). Despite having 4 fighters a side, the entire team shares one Vital Gauge, and the round ends when it is gone, regardless of which character is on point at the time. Furthermore not all 4 team members are available at the start of a match. Just the lead character and the first assist character chosen. The other two can be unlocked when you lose a round, as a sort of comeback mechanic, or when you hit a certain mid-match trigger like a wall break or scene transition. Assist characters can be switched into the lead role after performing an assist attack with them.
