Konami Krazy Racers, known as Konami Wai Wai Racing Advance, is a 3D behind-the-back kart racing game developed by KCE Kobe and published by Konami (Company) for the Game Boy Advance (Platform) as a launch title in Japan on March 21, 2001, in North America on June 10, 2001, and in Europe on June 15, 2001.

Playing similar to Nintendo's Mario Kart (Franchise) series, and released months before Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Konami Krazy Racers is a crossover racing game that features characters, stages, and items from numerous Konami games (such as Gradius (Franchise), Goemon (Franchise), pop'n music, Metal Gear (Franchise), and Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu (Franchise)). It is sometimes seen as a part of the Wai Wai World (Franchise) series.

It was later digitally re-released for the Wii U (Platform) (as a Virtual Console (Concept) title) in Europe on October 15, 2015, in North America on November 26, 2015, and in Japan on February 3, 2016.

Gameplay

Konami Krazy Racers is very similar to other 2D racing games on the Game Boy Advance (most similar to Mario Kart: Super Circuit). The game simulates a 3D environment by having a 2D racer sprite scrolling through a pseudo-3D world.

Items

Similar to the Mario Kart series, the game has items that can be picked-up by driving over an "item box" (which, in this game's case, is the bell from TwinBee). Unlike other kart racing games, there item boxes come in two colors: Red and Blue.

Red Bells contain one of the following items, at random:

  • Eye Wrap - The Eye Wrap makes the player invisible to the rest of the players.
  • Time Bomber - A bomb that explodes three seconds after being dropped, making it useful for hitting enemies behind the player.
  • Scooper Drill - A drill that allows the player to dig holes in the racetrack (causing enemies to fall into them).
  • Barrier - A shield that protects players from all attacks.
  • Blue Missile - These missiles shoot straight ahead, and will destroy anything in its path.
  • Red Missile - The Red Missile is a homing missile that hits one enemy ahead of the player.
  • Ice Crash - The Ice Crash item causes pillars of ice to come crashing down on all enemies.
  • Electric Battely - The Electric Battely zaps all enemies with an electrical charge.
  • Pigs - This item transforms all enemies into pigs, making them slower and more susceptible to attacks.

Another unique feature of the game is the ability to purchase and equip upgrades for each item in the persistent Item Shop, which allow players to use any three of these items multiple times when they receive it.

Blue Bells contain only one item, and that is a turbo booster. This one cannot be upgraded.
