Overview

Gotcha! The Sport! is a paintball-themed light-gun shooter published by LJN Toys for the Nintendo Entertainment System (Platform) in North America on November 1987. While uncredited, the game is believed to have been developed by members of Atlus (Company).

The first video game based on the sport of paintball (in its original "woodsball" variation), Gotcha! The Sport! tasks players with making their way back-and-forth the field to capture the enemy flag, all while shooting opponents to tag them out before they get tagged out themselves.

Its gameplay is unique in that players are required to use not only Nintendo's Zapper light gun peripheral for shooting, but also a standard controller for scrolling the view left and right in order to traverse the field. In addition, players have limited ammo to manage, which can only be replenished by shooting ammo boxes that regularly appear.

It is one of the earliest games sold by LJN (as part of their "Enteractive Video Games" series) and, similar to their other titles, it is a licensed one (named after the 1985 comedic spy-themed film Gotcha!, with only very minor similarities). It also received a line of paintball-like toy guns of the same name, which was sold by LJN subsidiary Entertech (better known at the time for realistic-looking battery-powered water guns).
