Overview

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a 2022 horror action-adventure game developed by Tango Gameworks (Company) using the Unreal 4 engine, and published by Bethesda Softworks (Company). The game is directed by Kenji Kimura, who also co-wrote the narrative with Syoji Ishimine and Seiji Ebihara.

Story

One night in Tokyo, a boy named Akito is hit by a car and left on the brink of death. Around the same time a mysterious fog flows through the streets, as Visitors pour out and wander the various wards of Tokyo, and the people are all ripped out of their bodies and trapped as incorporeal spirits. A wandering ghost known as KK possesses Akito's body, but is only partially successful, as Akito retains his sense of self and prevents KK from fully taking control until he can see his sister, who is currently bedridden at the hospital. The two of them head to the hospital, only to find a mysterious man in a Hannya mask who kidnaps Akito's sister and easily overpowers Akito, even with powers he borrowed from KK.

Facing the possibility of permanent death, Akito decides to work together with KK to purify the shrines, drive out the Visitors and the strange fog that covers Tokyo, and rescue the spirits of the people of Tokyo along with his sister before they can be used by the Hannya masked man to complete his evil plan.

Gameplay

Most of Ghostwire: Tokyo is played from a first-person perspective, through Akito's body, making use of KKs powers to defeat the various Visitors and other supernatural enemies.

KK Powers include:

  • Wind: The first attack power gained, using Akito's hand to fire spiritual bullets imbued with the power of wind. Charging up allows Akito to unleash multiple Wind strikes at once.
  • Fire: Powerful blasts imbued with the power of fire. Charging up this attack allows Akito to explode a wide range like a grenade. Can be upgraded to pierce through multiple enemies in a line.
  • Water: Short-distance but wide-ranging blasts of water power. Can be upgraded to hit multiple close enemies at once. Can be upgraded to create an ice field that temporarily freezes enemies in front of Akito

Some story or enemy attacks will rip KK out of Akito's body, and he will be unable to use those elemental attacks or some skills.

Other attacks Akito can use:

  • Bow & Arrow: A long range weapon hidden in KK's apartment. Akito can use this to perform powerful, quiet attacks from a distance.
  • Stun Talisman: A wide ranging talisman that Akito can throw on the ground that will stun most non-boss Visitors, allowing Akito to further damage them or even Quick Purge them from behind.
  • Wind Talisman: Akito can use these to temporarily create a pillar of wind that will let him reach higher ledges than a normal jump will allow.
  • Thicket Talisman: A talisman that creates a temporary thicket, allowing Akito to hide from the Visitors' line of sight.
  • Decoy Talisman: A talisman that produces a powerful sound that Vistors can hear, luring them to wherever it is placed.

While KK's attack powers can be recharged through Ether pickups in the environment or absorbed from Visitors, arrows and talismans are harder to find without paying a nekomata shopkeep some money to restock.
