Forbidden Forest is an early example of a proto-survival-horror video game for Atari 8-bit and the Commodore 64 (Platform). It was programmed by Paul Norman (Person) for Cosmi in 1983. It was followed by Beyond the Forbidden Forest (Game) in 1985 and a third game also titled Forbidden Forest in 2003 (unofficially referred to as Forbidden Forest 3).
The player takes the mantle of a brave archer who must fight his way through a creepy forest. Throughout the six stages, the player is attacked by monsters such as giant spiders, giant bees, giant toads, demons, and wizards. The player has a limited number of arrows per level and, as such, must carefully choose their shots. The game also includes a day/night cycle and a dynamic soundtrack.
The game attempted to create sense of tension and dread. For example, during the last stage, the enemy is invisible except when lightening strikes in the darkness.
