Overview
For Honor is a third-person multiplayer arena-based hack-and-slash game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft for the Xbox One (Platform), PlayStation 4 (Platform), and PC (Platform) on February 14, 2017.
Set in a mysterious post-apocalyptic fantasy world, the game features a neverending conflict between three factions (each based on real-life medieval military): the Knights of the forests of Ashfeld, the Vikings of the tundra of Valkenheim, and the Samurai (Concept) of the swamps of Myre.
Gameplay
The game features a story mode, but it is heavily focused on its multiplayer including several multiplayer modes. In both cases, players will often fight their way through legions of enemy minions to accomplish their goals.
When fighting another named enemy, the "Art of Battle" system comes into play, where each fighter must choose one of three directions either to attack or to parry their opponent's attacks. Each Hero has a light attack, heavy attack, guard break/throw, a parry, an unblockable attack, and can dodge. Beyond those basics, every Hero has a different playstyle that must be taken into account when using or fighting against them. Some characters have overwhelming power that can interrupt enemies, others can make use of dodges or feints to throw off an enemy's timing, some make use of a unique stance to gather power and strike from a longer distance, and others can parry or block attacks that seem indefensible.
Revenge
When a player is outnumbered by enemy Heroes, they can even the odds with Revenge mode. As they are attacked by multiple enemies who have locked onto them at the same time, they will slowly build up a golden Revenge meter. If they stay alive long enough through dodging or parrying attacks, they can activate Revenge mode, immediately knocking back surrounding enemies, and for about 7 seconds, the Revenge player will gain a shield of extra HP, damage buff, infinite stamina, hyper armor, and guardbreak invulnerability both ways.
Setting
For Honor is set in an alternate version of Earth where a global event known simply as The Cataclysm rocked the Earth, both physically and spiritually, somewhere around the 11th or 12th Century AD. Volcanoes erupted, massive earthquakes broke the surface, tsunamis sunk whole islands, entire continents were merged or broken. Reigning powers of the time were overthrown and the humans who managed to avoid disaster were focused mostly on saving themselves. Centuries have passed since then, but technology hasn't evolved much, as the survivors of the Cataclysm now find themselves embroiled in war with other factions. For glory, for riches, for territory, or simply for honor, the warriors of different factions must fight for something.
Story
The main story mode is a continuous tale covering the three main factions about 12 years leading up to the present. First, the Knights, as a Warden gets selected by the leader of the Blackstone Legion, a woman named Apollyon. She leads a unit into the Viking lands to burn some of their food stores to ensure that the Vikings will have to fight each other over the remainder or starve, leading the Warden to then quit in disgust.
In part two, an ambitious Viking Raider sees his people at each other's throats. Deciding he can no longer idly stand by, the Raider forcibly unites his people under the Warborn banner, and then takes control of a shipyard from the Knights to launch a Great Raid on the Myre, where the Samurai live. After hard fought battles, the Vikings manage to take control of the Imperial City, unaware that they are playing right into Apollyon's hands by reigniting war across the continent.
In part three, an Orochi is freed from prison to fight the Vikings who are currently sacking the Imperial City and slaughtering the Samurai. The Orochi eventually links up with Ayu, a Kensei and one of Apollyon's warlords who she has freed from captivity in The Myre to make them fight each other to the death for control of the surviving Samurai. After many bloody battles, Ayu and the Orochi manage to push the Vikings out of the Imperial City and unite the Myre under Ayu's rule. Then Ayu sends the Orochi to get payback from Apollyon directly.
The Orochi manages to kill Apollyon during the battle, but she mocks the idea that the different factions will be able to achieve peace instead of the endless war she desired, now that she has successfully put them at each other's throats. However, Ayu of the Samurai, Holden Cross of the Knights, and Stigandr of the Vikings are willing to set aside their differences and begin the hard work of persuading their respective factions to pursue peace throughout Heathmoor.
Though the main story mode ends there, it is mentioned in supplemental materials that the three factions attempt to lay down their arms some years later. But the Order of Horkos, a warmongering cult who believed in Apollyon's ideals, sabotages the negotiations to begin the war anew. Holden, Stigandr, and Ayu decide to band their loyal forces together against Horkos, as well as the new invaders from the East coming under the banner of Wu Lin, and mysterious Outlanders who have come to add to the chaos.
Heroes
At the game's launch, each of the three factions received four heroes (one for each class type). More heroes and factions have been added post-launch.
For the Starter Edition for the PC version of the game, players start with six characters fully unlocked: the three Vanguard heroes and one of three groups of heroes (either Conqueror/Peacekeeper/Lawbringer, Warlord/Berserker/Valkyrie, or Shugoki/Orochi/Nobushi). The other six launch heroes are locked from play (similar to DLC heroes) and require a hefty sum to unlock.

- Dominion (4v4) - Objective mode. Each battlefield has three "zones" that can be captured by either standing uncontested in it (zones A and C) or by pushing the front line of AI minions (zone B). Once a team reaches the point threshold, the enemy team can no longer respawn unless they bring the score below the threshold. The last team standing wins the match.

The first team to secure all three Offerings at once, or the team with the most secured Offerings when the game timer expires, wins the match.
- Breach (4v4, added on October 16, 2018) - Asymmetrical objective mode. The Attacking team, who have limited respawns, must escort a battering ram to breach two locations (the outer wall and inner gate), then defeat a powerful AI boss minion. The Defending team, who have unlimited respawns, must either prevent the Attacking team from completing their goals within the time limit or eliminate all Attackers.
