Dottori Kun
GAME » on 1990
A demake of the 1979 dot-munching game Head On, developed by Sega in the '90s solely to bypass a Japanese law that prohibits the distribution of arcade machines without games.

Overview

Dottori Kun is a top-down driving maze game developed and released by Sega for arcades in Japan in 1990. A demake of the 1979 arcade game Head On, Dottori Kun was included in all of Sega's non-dedicated arcade cabinets in the 1990's to comply with a new Japanese law prohibiting the sale of arcade cabinets without any game included. Like the original, players guide their vehicle (an arrow) around the board collecting dots while avoiding enemy vehicles (as X's). Intended to be thrown out by arcade operators once they put other game hardware in the machine, Dottori Kun was developed with very inexpensive hardware at the time and only met the minimum specifications for the "game" (with low-resolution graphics, no sound, and no coin operation). It also served as a quick diagnostics tool for the cabinet's input and screen. It was later included as a bonus game in the Sega Astro City Mini mini-console.
