Destrega is a 3D medieval-fantasy platformer-fighting game developed by Omega Force (Company) and published by Koei (Company) for the Sony PlayStation in Japan on September 23, 1998, in North America on January 31, 1999, and in Europe on October 8, 1999.

Developed by the studio behind the 1997 fighting game Dynasty Warriors (Franchise) (and later the Musou (Franchise) series of beat-'em-ups), Destrega is a more unorthodox fighting game that features a free-roaming movement system and a unique long-ranged attack system of casting magic spells (along with multiple ways of evading, guarding, or deflecting them, each with varying effectiveness).

The game's plot is set in the small fictional continent of Zamuel, where magic-wielders called "Strega" bestowed mystical objects of great power to ordinary humans, only for human ambition to cause the country to tear itself apart in war. A millenia later, relics of these objects were later uncovered, with the dreaded Zauber (Character) of the Empire of Ipsen using them to seize power and begin hunting down remaining Strega descendants. The main story follows Gradd (Character), one of the last surviving Strega who joins a push by the resistance to stop Zauber's conquest.

It later received a digital re-release as a PSone Classics (Concept) title for supported PlayStation Network (Concept) consoles in North Ameirca on February 15, 2011.

Gameplay

Destrega is a six-button fighting game, with three Attack buttons (Square, Triangle, and Circle by default), a Jump button (X by default), a Dash button (R1 by default), and a Guard button (L1 by default). Movement is done by free-roaming with the D-Pad/Analog Stick.

The three attack buttons perform different types of attacks, either long-ranged Magic Attacks or close-ranged Melee Attacks:

  • Fast (Tidu) Magic Attacks (Square button by default) travel extremely fast, making them hard to jump over, and beat Power Magic Attacks of the same level. At close range, it instead becomes a Weak Melee Attack that can be comboed into other attacks.
  • Power (Est) Magic Attacks (Triangle button by default) deal stronger damage, making them harder to deflect, and beat Span Magic Attacks of the same level. At close range, it instead becomes a Power Melee Attack for increased damage and knockdown.
  • Span (Foh) Magic Attacks (Circle button by default) fan out into a wider area, making them harder to dodge, and beat Fast Magic Attacks of the same level. At close range, it instead becomes a Sidestep Melee Attack that moves around the opponent to bypass guarding.

Each Magic Attack has a short charge-up time to cast, and requires part of a regenerating Charge Bar below the fighter's health gauge. Each fighter also shouts the type of Magic Attack (Tidu, Est, or Foh) so that they can be countered accordingly.

During a charge, players can upgrade their Magic Attack (from Lv. 1, to Lv. 2, then Lv. 3) by pressing additional attack buttons (of any type). Each upgrade requires an additional amount of the Charge Bar and extends the charge-up time, but makes it more powerful and alters the properties of the attack. Having an attack make use of all three types performs a unblockable Special Magic Attack. While charging, players can also interrupt the cast to perform one of the following actions:

  • Pressing the Dash button instead perform a Charge Dash, which augments a forward dash to deflect Magic Attacks. Cannot deflect Magic Attacks of a higher Level, nor can it defend against melee attacks.
  • Pressing the Guard button instead performs a Charge Guard, which deflects Magic Attacks with a barrier. The Guard button can be held down to consume more of the Charge Bar and keep the barrier up.
  • Pressing the Jump button instead performs a Charge Jump, which augments a tall jump by allowing the player to quickly cast multiple Lv. 1 Magic Attacks by pressing different attack buttons in sequence.

The standard Guard can be tapped right before certain low-level Magic Attacks hit the fighter to deflect the projectile away harmlessly.
