Deep Scan
GAME » on 1979
A naval combat arcade game by Sega and a successor to Gremlin's 1977 game Depthcharge, with you as a battleship dropping depth charges at enemy submarines. It is best known as a mini-game in the 1997 Saturn version of Die Hard Arcade.

Overview

Deep Scan is a naval combat game developed by Gremlin and released by Gremlin/Sega (with Sega (Company) themselves releasing it in Japan) for arcades in 1979. It later received a home Atari 2600 (Platform) conversion by Sega in 1982 as Sub Scan. Like its predecessor, the 1977 game Depthcharge (Game), Deep Scan puts players in control of a battleship dropping depth charges down to the water in order to destroy submarines scrolling through the screen (and must move left-and-right to dodge their mines floating upward). New features include a taller screen showing a mini-map (the "View Port") and the game's "ranking" system (which increases the difficulty as the game progresses). Along with a standalone release, it was released as part of the DUAL (sometimes known as VIC DUAL) multi-game arcade system, where it can be played alongside Head On 2 (Game) or Invinco. The game was later known for its recreation as a bonus mini-game in the Sega Saturn version of the mid-'90s beat-'em-up game Die Hard Arcade / Dynamite Deka. Every 200 points scored in this mini-game adds to the main game's pool of extra credits.
