Check vs. Mate, known outside of North America as Battle vs. Chess, is a high-fantasy digital chess game developed by Targem Games (Company) and published by TopWare Interactive (Company) in Europe for the Xbox 360 (Platform) and PlayStation 3 (Platform) on May 11, 2011, with PC (Platform) and Mac (Platform) releases on May 17, 2011. It later received a digital North American release for the PC and Mac on August 16, 2012.
An adaptation of the traditional game of chess, and making use of the Fritz (Franchise) chess engine, Check vs. Mate features a fantasy theme in which each of the game's pieces are represented by animated characters (similar to Battle Chess (Game)), with the White pieces represented by angelic "Order" forces and the Black pieces represented by demonic "Chaos" forces.
In addition to traditional chess, the game includes alternate starting piece placements (including a "tactical" option where players freely place their pieces on their side of the board prior to the game starting), alternate play styles (including Marseillais chess), an Archon (Franchise)-style "Battlegrounds" mode (where capturing pieces requires either a quick-time event in "Duel" mode or third-person hack-and-slash combat in "Slasher" mode), a story-based "Campaign" mode, and several chess puzzles.
The game was initially unreleased in North America due to a trademark lawsuit from Interplay, rights-holder of the Battle Chess (Franchise) series.
