Mars Attacks
FRANCHISE »
A controversial trading card set from the 1960s published by Topps that spawned a cult following.

Released in 1962 by Topps, the Mars Attacks collectible card set told a story of an alien invasion of Earth from the planet Mars as a sendup to the alien invasion movie genre of the 1950s. The cards depicted the ultraviolent horrors and carnage so well that the series was eventually cancelled due to pressure from parent groups. In 1996, Tim Burton (Person) directed Mars Attacks!, an adaptation of the original card storyline. While the film was considered a flop, it is perhaps the most responsible for reintroducing the bug-eyed, skullfaced Martian antagonists to a new generation and developed a cult brand for sci-fi enthusiasts. In the years after its release, the Martian invaders have appeared in comic books published by IDW, and crossed over with bigger names like Judge Dredd, the Ghostbusters, and Popeye. Newer sets of trading cards have also yielded new storylines as the sequel to the original set. Although they've never appeared in video games as themselves, their inspiration can be seen through the Destroy All Humans series of games.
