Overview
Founded in 2014 following the conclusion of the Spike Video Game Awards (Concept) (which TGA host Geoff Keighley (Person) produced), the Game Awards are an annual video games award show. Like the VGAs, the show focuses on awards interspersed by video game trailers, live musical performances, and comedic skits, albeit with a more mature presentation. Since 2017, the Game of the Year award has been preceded by a live orchestra (referred to as The Game Awards Orchestra) performing a medley of music from the award's nominees (an idea first experimented with at the 2012 Spike VGAs.) While the 2014 Game Awards reportedly attracted a comparatively modest two million live viewers, ten years later the 2024 show had a reported count of 154 million live viewers across the show's duration. The awards show is held annually in December.
Selection Process
Each year's nominees are decided are decided in the Fall, first by a vote of several journalistic outlets and figures in the games coverage industry. This jury's choices are used to collate the list of final nominees, whereupon viewers are allowed to vote on their choices in advance. The vote is weighed 9-to-1, with the jury vote accounting for 90% of the final results, and community votes accounting for 10%. On top of this, each year has a "Players' Voice" category, voted on in the days immediately leading up to the event. This category begins with a larger number of games than the other categories, with viewers voting on a decreasing number of games across three rounds to eventually get a single winner. As implied, this category is decided entirely by viewer vote.
