A mandragora is a plant with a root shaped vaguely like a man and are often depicted as being capable of mobility. Legend has it that whenever a mandragora is uprooted it screams, slaying whoever hears it instantly. They are an important ingredient in many spells. In reality, there IS a plant called mandragora, related to deadly nightshade; it shares none of its mythical counterpart's traits beyond being a poisonous plant.
