Klaptraps made their debut as small enemies with sharp teeth inDonkey Kong Country (Game) on the SNES, and came in three different colors: red, blue, and green, with the red versions jumping whenever Donkey Kong (Character) or Diddy Kong (Character) jumps. They reprised their roles as common enemies in Donkey Kong Landon the Game Boyas well. Klaptraps never appeared in the sequels, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest or Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, but were replaced by similar enemies named Klampon and Krimp, respectively. The enemies reappeared inDonkey Kong 64 (Game) on the Nintendo 64 (Platform), in which their teeth will continuosly attack the Kongs after they have been defeated. A larger version of the Klaptrap, fittingly called the Giant Klaptrap, was also introduced. This purple version of the creature could only be defeated by being hit with an Orange Grenade. Klaptraps are also playable in one of the game's mini-games, Beaver Brother. Klaptraps later became common "obstacles" used in several spinoff games, including several Mario (Character) titles, such as Donkey Konga (Game), Mario Power Tennis (Game), Mario Superstar Baseball (Game), and Mario Party 7 (Game). They also make cameo appearances in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. A trophy of the creature appears in the former, with the description as follows:
"This low-slung alligator made its first appearance in Donkey Kong Country. You can subdue it by jumping on its back, but it's powerful jaws make it dangerous to approach from the front. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, it swims in the river and sometimes jumps in the Barrel Cannon to stop players from using it. "'
