Overview

To flip someone off refers to a hand gesture that some western cultures find highly offensive.  It is performed by raising one's hand with the middle finger extended upwards and the back of the hand facing the gesture's intended recipient.  Slang terms for the gesture include flipping the bird and giving the finger.  The gesture is considered offensive enough by some cultures to warrant censoring if displayed on a television broadcast.  Despite its offensive connotation, the exact origin of the gesture as an insult is unknown.
