The name of Easter is commonly thought to have derived from a series of names that had its origins with Ēostre, a Germanic goddess. The month of April (in which Easter often falls) was known as Eostur-mónaþ in old English, and was named after her. The holiday of Easter is a floating holiday, and is often part of a weeklong observance. It has ties to the Jewish holiday of passover. It also signifies the end of Lent.
