The double kill started as really a bragging right amongst shooter players. While it originally had no technical boundaries, the concept has grown to a fully integrated piece of many shooters today. Conceptually the double kill is two kills in a very short span of time, which would be a demonstration of the player's skill or abilities. Currently double kills have been epitomized in the Halo series where the announcer will call out "double kill" after the player achieves 2 kills within a 4 second time span. This idea has been duplicated in many manners, however the term "double kill" has remained consistent.
