Years ago, Tarman went whale hunting with his son, hoping to capture BTs that could be studied to further research and potentially reverse the Death Stranding. However, one hooked whale released multiple BTs on deck that attacked his son. Tarman tried to save him, but lost his right hand in the process as they dragged his son under the tar. However, Tarman's missing hand allows him to feel the ebb and flow of the tar currents, helping him safely steer the Magellan and her crew through them. Tarman also has a winged catlike creature perched on his shoulder, who he first thought was the reincarnation of his son, but is not entirely sure. Tarman's likeness and appearance are modeled after real-life film director George Miller.
