Overview
Kyon is the main protagonist and narrator of the Haruhi Suzumiya (Franchise) light novel/anime series. The name “Kyon” is not his real name but a nickname given to him by his aunt and spread by his little sister. Neither his nor his sister's names are ever stated, however it is hinted that Kyon's name has a majestic quality to it, that doesn't seem to fit him. While already a major character in the series, Kyon arguably becomes the main force behind many events in the series, as Kyon is the reason Haruhi joined North High and the reason she created the SOS Brigade. Over the series, Haruhi slowly comes to develop feelings for Kyon.
Background
Seated right in front of Haruhi's desk, Kyon is the only classmate to attempt engaging Haruhi in conversation multiple times. During their second conversation, Haruhi begins to warm up to him, going as far as wondering if they had met before. In a later discussion, Kyon inadvertently gives Haruhi the idea to form her own club, and is subsequently forced to help her build the SOS Brigade.
As the central protagonist and narrator of the events surrounding Haruhi and the SOS Brigade, he is often dragged into her ridiculous schemes against his will, and his retelling is often paired with sarcastic commentary. He is known to be observant, especially during Brigade outings, although his grades are merely average, in part because of the amount of his free time the club's activities tend to take up. He also displays remarkable general knowledge during his narration, often referencing complex notions of science and literature to draw comparisons.
SOS Brigade
As the first member to be forcefully recruited for the SOS Brigade, Kyon often refers to himself as the voice of reason, as he is possibly the only person Haruhi would listen to if someone was to object to her ideas. Even so, this is uncommon, since Itsuki wants Haruhi to have her way to protect the world's status quo, Yuki is typically content observing any possible outcome, and Mikuru is mostly oblivious to the consequences. Although Kyon often expresses a certain melancholy upon Haruhi getting new ideas for club activities, Kyon wonders on several occasions if his life is ultimately more exciting and more fun because of the Brigade, something which he ultimately admits to himself when placed in an alternate "normal" reality in The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Being the only 'regular' member of the SOS Brigade, Kyon's presence presents a mystery to the three supernatural factions observing Haruhi since, while she had explicitly wished for aliens, time travelers, and espers to join her, there is no immediate explanation for Kyon's appearance. This leads to Kyon arguably becoming the most important person in Haruhi's life, as seen with her readiness to recreate the entire world but keep him, as well as in her late affection for him.
John Smith
The name 'John Smith' is a pseudonym Kyon used during the events of “Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody”, from the series' third novel. Following her superior's orders, Mikuru takes Kyon back in time to the Tanabata festival three years prior to the story's timeline, to witness a critical event in Haruhi's existence. Kyon uses the name in order to conceal his identity from the young Haruhi, and is forced to help her draw a gigantic symbol onto the school's playing field. Kyon goes out of his way to mention North High to her, implying supernatural forces could be found there.
From that moment onward, Haruhi searched for "John Smith", wondering where she might find him. Haruhi later references this event when asking Kyon if they had met before, which Kyon denies.
