After losing his wife and daughter during the Death Stranding, Heartman was shocked back to life when an automatic defibrillator regained power. Heartman found he had the ability to travel through other Beaches when dead, and so he keeps regularly stopping his own heart, hoping to find the Beach with his dead family to meet them one last time . Every 21 minutes, the AED shocks him and stops his heart for 3 minutes, and he spends that time exploring a Beach for 3 minutes of real-world time until the AED resuscitates him.
Upon meeting Sam in person for the first time, Heartman claims to have killed himself 218,550 times.
