During the Old Tales event, the story revealed that Grave was a scientist named Abe, who had her own brain put in the model of a Product 23 Nikke so she could continue working without sleeping. She designed the 2nd-generation Grimm Nikke models and planned to use them to help Goddess Squad and the remaining humans kill the Rapture Queen. However, Cinderella was somehow corrupted and turned against her allies, slaughtering humans and Nikkes alike, until Abe was able to fight back and show Cinderella her own visage. Even after Goddess Squad managed to rally and defeat Cinderella, Abe refused to give up on her. Abe helped Cinderella escape captivity, and then tracked her down again when she killed Red Shoes and fled. Finally, Abe joined the other Grimm Nikkes at the Lift to finish the job of the original Goddess Squad. However, the Queen vaporized sections of the Lift, sending Abe plummeting back down to the ground, leaving Cinderella by herself to finish the mission. One year after that mission, Abe roamed the surface and managed to come across Cinderella's body, somehow still alive. Using parts of her own body, she managed to preserve Cinderella's body in a special coffin until she could find a way to restore her to full strength. Years later, Abe found a search party of modern Nikkes, but they turned her over to a corporate lab that proceeded to experiment on her for a year. The researchers declared Abe a failure, and tossed her back onto the surface. Even though Abe had her face disfigured and her brain damaged from the experiments, she decided to take the name Grave and slowly strengthened her body and mind, hiding her face behind a helmet, still hoping to find a way to bring Cinderella back.
