BB-8 is a spherical astromech droid first appearing in the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Owned by pilot, Poe Dameron, the droid was tasked with an important mission for the Resistance, eventually joining Rey and Finn in its adventures.

Design
BB-8 was imagined by J.J. Abrams and created by Neal Scanlan in cooperation with the Star Wars creature shop. Using practical effects, the creature shop team created different versions of the BB-8 droid, including puppets, remote control, and static props. A fully-functioning, practical BB-8 debuted alongside J.J. Abrams at Star Wars Celebration in April of 2015.
