The son of Doctor Marcel, Alfred is Edna's childhood playmate, although they don't get along at all.

When Edna's family were neighbours with the Marcel family, Alfred and Edna often had to play together. Alfred often ended up on the bad side of Edna's machinations, with her putting a lizard down his top on at least one occasion. He's not very intelligent and often seems quite smug and delights in getting Edna into trouble and making sure she serves her punishment. When Alfred dies, it kicks off a sequence of events wherein Mattis is imprisoned and Edna is taken into the custody of his father, Doctor Marcel, head of the insane asylum.
