Overview
Velvet Sundown is a free to play social multiplayer roleplaying game developed by Tribe Studios and released for PC and Mac via Steam on July 22, 2014.
The game takes place in one of four scenarios with between four and 11 players. One scenario is a single player tutorial which teaches the basic controls and another is a cut down version of one of the other two scenarios, which rotates weekly for free players to enjoy. Premium players can play both of these scenarios, as well as the two full premium scenarios available. Each player is randomly assigned one of 11 characters, various information and items to serve as bargaining chips, as well as one or more secret goals. Players must socialize with other players to work toward achieving their goal before any other player achieves theirs. During conversations, the game uses text to speech technology to vocalize the dialogue that players type in for their characters to say.
Premium memberships are available for $5.99 per month. This gives the user full access to all scenarios, enables them to hear the synthesized speech and also provides them with an icon next to their name.
It should probably be noted that this game is no longer in development, and no longer supported by anyone (I do not know the exact date it officially stopped working but this writing is as of July 2018). At some point the developer was bought out, but the text to speech stopped working- possibly due to an intentional lapse in paying for the licensing. After a short amount of time the game stopped working altogether. It still exists on steam, but no longer loads- only returning errors if you try to play it.
