MERCH!
Giant Bomb - a website about video games and the people that make them

daavpuke's Articles

Since Giant Bomb rose from the ashes, allow me to sort of do the same, despite making my last list . I didn't think I'd return to a three year old series, but here we are. For those wondering, I was planning to finally play every Pokémon generation, before the world and my own life cratered. This road started with wrapping up all of Pokémon Yellow in writing on this website about video games. A...

Well darn, it looks like some folks around here are acting foolishly and need some reminders. That's all good and swell, because that means that we get to, once again, perform my favorite activity: making a list. Huzzah! We should look at some games that have, also, lost their way and caused a real concern for the nice people who worked so hard on it, just for you. It's such a shame that there...

Another eventful PUBG: Battlegrounds season has come to an end and what a tumultuous year it's been for its eSports branch, in particular. For one, the unification of the regular game and eSports settings means that maps are now more varied, both in their pool as well as in the things inside of them. Sandstorms on Miramar and blizzards in the snowy Vikendi tear through the landscape, as players...

After watching the huge Double Fine documentary about Psychonauts 2 , I wanted to go back and watch the Broken Age one again. My memory no longer exists. I feel like I now have intimate knowledge of the development studio (I don't) , especially since both documentaries constantly reference earlier footage. Those callbacks also established a history that I found increasingly bizarre. Yet, no one...

I've already completed my picks for GOTY 2022 . I think that you'll find them to be the best choices on this site. All other games are inferior. However, Giant Bomb has surprised us with some list variations this year. So, inspired by the works of Jan and Tam , I will be transforming some games into alternate media as well. I've picked ten games and paired them with their metal track counterpar...

At some point, I need to call it, when it comes to playing cool games in 2022. I've used December to hold a mad dash of releases I hadn't played, to potentially put on a list. In just these few weeks, I've played Super Kiwi 64 , Immortality , 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim , Triangle Strategy , Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising and Marvel Snap . That's what I could afford, at least. Except for Triangle Strate...

The new Fortnite season is here! Chapter? It's one of those interchangeable words, for sure. There's new content for Fortnite! This means that there's another battle pass to complete, which I already have done. Well, I'm above level 100; now I just need to prestige it. Additionally, the game has another regimen of special events and landscape changes in store for the island. I'd review the whol...

Spoiler warning: I'm nowhere near the end, but I reveal one or two big story beats in this. Do not read this if you don't want to know. As much as I hate repeating myself, I bought a Nintendo Switch . I'm, also, still mostly playing Fortnite , since it's the lowest possible effort right now. I have, however, prestiged my battle pass by now, which is 200 levels. So, now I don't need to look at m...

So I bought a Nintendo Switch . I think I said that already. With the help of the Giant Bomb community, I made a small list of games that I'd one day try to find an affordable copy of, though I'll admit it's a mission that's a lot harder than I thought. Nintendo things are an eternal constant. There are about a dozen titles I'm keeping an eye out for, like Selener. While I'm waiting for the fat...

It's not news that I go through game collection sprees periodically. I've been looking for a Wii U for months now. You'd think it would be easy to find someone doing away with a console no one wants. For some reason though, people are selling their unwanted child for either way too much or in a ridiculous, incomplete state. Then, two-ish weeks ago, I finally replaced my broken Playstation 1 wit...

Previous entry: Scurvy Scallywags I don't know if I should start by talking about the current state of this website. I feel like it's both inevitable and also not the place to do so. I'll keep writing, because I think written content is undervalued these days. Someone has to keep every piece of video game chronicling from splintering into yet another undetectable Discord, right? I think that su...

Previous entry: NJPW Strong Spirits Mobile games these days have turned a corner. While perhaps the healthiness of the platform's model may not have improved, at least companies have figured out how to really crank out a product . That wasn't always the case. For a time, mobile releases were just trying to recreate a different experience, more compact in its ambition. Tons of developers turned...

Hi, I'm doing another series; big surprise. It's the only way I can still feel feelings, by stringing them together into continuous segments of more feelings to come. The more avid (read: compulsive) reader may have picked up on me buying almost every Pokémon generation , to cope with some stuff. After several months of letting that pricey mistake fester in me, I've finally made the move toward...

Previous entry: Clicker Royale I've recently been in and out of an appreciation for wrestling. It's a 'funny' story. World War 3 was a trending term, as it tends to be, which led me to a wrestling review YouTube channel that I had forgotten. The group of crass Irish dudes throw in a litany of Simpsons and video game references, as they dismantle every segment they've ever watched. It's an insen...

I've entered another ridiculous shopping spree. These last few weeks, I've amassed about two dozen new old games. It all started with looking up the availability of some random Playstation 2 games, like From Software's back catalog, such as Eternal Ring or Evergrace . Before I knew it, I was several packages deep into more terrible license games and forgotten spinoffs. I have a problem. I didn'...

Previous entry: Dota Underlords I think that, by now, I've highlighted enough mobile giants and chances are pretty likely that there will be several more. So, this week, we'll steer away from household names and instead look towards tiny games. Don't worry, it's not Wordle , though that's also a good time. To find our bite-size experience, we turn to the one place that's actually not terrible a...

Previous entry: League of Legends: Wild Rift Remember auto chess? This genre suddenly sprouted from a Dota 2 mod , to a point where I was watching streamers load up the game, who had never even played a single match of the Valve monolith. Eventually, the genre became a craze that took over the zeitgeist from battle royales ; that's how obsessed people were about this. The original mod creators...

Previous entry: Fantasy Life Online I dove into my backlog of mobile games for this next entry of Mobile Game of the Week. MGOTW? Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue smoothly. Anyway, I've discovered a few things. The first is that a bunch of the games I've played have now been discontinued, meaning I'm unsure if I can still mention them here. They've made a lot of cool stuff out there and then...

Ever since having to readjust my gaming life considerably, I've had a lot of conversations with people about mobile games. Surprisingly, almost everyone I talked to still thinks of phone games as the relics of app store garbage from a decade ago. It's a mentality that I've seen a lot, with multiple genres. Every free game is pay-to-win, every gachapon game is a cash grab and every mobile game i...

The title is a double entendre, because I'm dying of a mysterious illness. That's not the subject here though, I just thought that would be funny. Rather, I wanted to do some housekeeping and hold myself accountable, inspired by another Giant Bomb thread about finishing your video game plate. Four months ago, I mentioned in my questing blog that I finally started tackling my backlog dark horse,...

Playerunknown's Battlegrounds , now known as PUBG, is a phenomenon to say the least. The game went from being the undisputed king, changing the very shape of video games to this day, to being an evanescent afterthought in that very same space. Giant Bomb even crowned it as Game of the Year , in a pretty controversial turn of events. If you still play the battle royale (BR) genre that it has soa...

By now, most people who are active on Twitter in the gaming space have likely seen the calamity that is IGN's list, which decides the best video game of all time . The obvious caveat is that deciding such a feat is always going to result in animosity, but it's safe to say that this pointless bracket has managed to surpass even that leniency. After several questionable choices, the finale landed...

After the gargantuan undertaking of last time, where I completed both versions of Lord of the Rings: The Third Age , I needed a palette cleanser. Luckily, I have seventeen unfinished games running at any time. One of those projects that I got way into, but never finished, was NeverDead , the now infamous Konami joint. Though developed by Rebellion, the action shooter with dismemberment mechanis...

As people get older, their motivation for playing video games tends to ebb and flow. As someone who has played video games ever since they were able to make memories, however, this obstructing feeling hits different, as the kids say. Having that drive suddenly evaporate like water in the desert sun has been challenging, these last few months. Life post-2020 has become exponentially harder each...

Now that video games have been entrenched into mainstream media, Netflix has been trying to latch on tight. After a League of Legends documentary, several seasons of a Castlevania series and even a terrible take on Dragon's Dogma, the streaming service has teamed up with an industry titan. Together with Valve, an animated series about none other than Defense of the Ancients was spawned, named D...

Coming right out with it: I just finished the PlayStation 3 (PS3) exclusive Lair . What a roller coaster ride it has been! I do mean that quite directly. Wow, has that game left me sweating and out of breath. So, before we go off the deep end, let's hang back a little, for context reasons. What's a good roller coaster without a slow climb. A while ago, I wrote about buying a lot of 45 PS3 games...

Back in the olden times of late 2020, I, like many of us, saw Jan and Ben get really into mahjong, so I started to learn alongside our hosts. Thanks to them vocalizing their process, I was able to latch onto the basics, enough for me to download Mahjong Soul , to train for the next episode. For some time, I restricted myself to playing in the room with artificial intelligence (AI). My thought p...

I have a confession to make: I fucked up. Last time , I mentioned buying old PSP copies to explore the plethora of crappy video games that are out there. As it often happens, my disease for collecting ill-conceived boxes makes me tend to linger on used market websites. I'm a lingerer; I linger. To really illustrate my bad taste, my main goal at the moment is trying to acquire an affordable Nint...

Hi, there. Where have I been? Long story short: Life bad . In fact, it's so bad that it's best to not dwell on details. So, yeah, there probably won't be any wiki editing happening any time soon. Instead, I can tell you that, in the meantime, I've cataloged my console game collection, which spans over 800 games . A last minute addition of about 30 games came from taking over someone's old PlayS...

Oh, hi there, I'm back. There have been a few hurdles in the way of keeping up the edits, what with my Premium running out and not being able to afford a re-up, which doesn't keep me on the site as long. Luckily, I managed to scrape by some coins for the Giant Bomb Premium sale, which is happening right now, baby. Only a few more days to go, so act fact! I've also been grinding away at Apex Leg...

For years, my Giant Bomb account was inaccessible to me. I could either not log in or it spat me out to a duplicate account that the switch from Whiskey Media forced me to create. The most important reason for me to finally kick my anxiety aside long enough to bother Rorie to see about fixing it, after years and years of waiting, was that I enjoyed filling out Wiki entries for games other peopl...

I'm finally free from my Division 2 hole, after over a week of going to a node on a map, instantly dying to a hidden monster closet, retracing my steps for five minutes, dying to my skills going on cooldown, backtracking for five minutes again, dying to an elite instantly running up on me and, well, you get the gist. People on the Giant Bomb Discord are weirdly infatuated with the game, still,...

Man, it sure takes a while to go through all this hashtag content that comes up during the Game of the Year (GOTY) deliberations. I only just managed to get through it all and I like this new format a lot. Here’s to the crew thinking of us with bad memory, to give us an actual recap of what all these games, good and bad, are about. Please continue doing that, because I drank a lot and lost most...

There is a certain redeeming quality to having to play Civilization V on a completely decrepit, ancient PC. During turns, it takes the bedazzled adding machine about 10 minutes to process all the other players moves, meaning there’s a lot of downtime. Of course, at first, you spend your time looking at the screen like an addicted idiot, but somewhere down the line you realize you’re wasting you...

This is a continuation of this blog . And there it is: It only took a few days for Steam's devious marketing to crack my 'strong' willpower and make me give in to their consumerist ways. What swayed me? The thing that always gets me: The perfect game. Thanks to 2K and Sid Meier's incredible genius, I am now the owner of the 2K Complete pack, which holds too many titles indeed. When Steam had a...

It's official! My first purchase through Steam has finally clamored my descent into absolute destitution. Being able to purchase things at the drop of a (TF2 reference) hat is by far the worst idea ever for consumers. And I mean that only in the sense that our sense of fickle consumerism makes us buy much more than we need. Cue my newest additions. As you can see, I'm finally the proud owner of...

No matter how quiet you get, you'll never be able to shut the voice in your head up.

You know what? I'll just blanket remove everything. The past is over.

Anxiety is like having your own, eternal pet, except that pet is a hornet's nest that's trapped in your chest and desperately wants to get out.

Well shit, I forgot this interview I did with the Owlboy developers is all the way back in 2010. I'm old.

You'd think anxious people would drink less coffee, but somehow we drink more? What's that about?

There are no good or bad choices or consequences. Existence just happens. Don't let it rule you.

Some day, we'll all look back on this and laugh. Not a good laugh, but a laugh.

Good thing I excel in going through motions, just for the sake of it, to reduce anxiety through menial routine.

Dreams do not need to be attainable to be worthwhile. Not having goals to achieve shouldn't be seen as lacking.

It's astounding the amount of bullshit you can amass through the years.

Throughout the years, I think the best thing we collectively learn is to use much fewer exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!

It's not about hiding yourself; it's about just getting to terms with the ending of your past self and moving on.

Anyone who is going back this far is really just doing it to themselves at this point.
