So let's start off by addressing the hype for this game, it's a major factor. Some say the massive hype means a lot of people are setting expectations too high for this game, 5 years is a long time though and this game deserves to be judged on the amount of the development time and opportunity it was given. In that respect, it is not good.
The game is massively detailed but in all the wrong places,
-1000+ cars when only about 40-50 are actually interesting, what is the point of citroen 2cv's and vw camper vans?
-insides of certain premium cars while the outside of other less premium cars stand out like a blurry thumb amongst the rest, comparing a ferrari to my dodge truck was like putting a bad ps3 game against a good ps2 one
-the backgrounds and landscapes are awful, crowds in the stands look like 2d cardboard cutouts, this just came across as lazy
- menus. I spent most of this game stuck in menus and loading times. Depsite a full install which took a very long time I still spent way too much time waiting for something to load only to be taken to yet another menu. JUST LET ME RACE!!
- credit system, 20million? Seriously the credit system is way too skewed. It ended up that I just wasted a massive amount of electricity leaving the PS3 running on b-spec to gain enough credits to buy the car I wanted. That's not skill, just a waste of my time and money, It's once again another obstacle to JUST LETTING ME RACE! I can see PD have tried to create a ranking system similar to COD but they've jacked it too much so it's too far removed to get to the top levels.
-b-spec, what's the point? Seriously this should have been like champ manager back in the day, I was really hoping this would deliver what it promised. Instead it was a wholly unsophisticated, I played a football manager game on MS excel in work that was more sophisticated than this game mode. It only serves as a mean to increasing credits and like I said before waste my 'leccy risking YLOD
-all this detail and they didn't bother to do car damage well, instead of crumpling the cars tend to deform. Instead of looking like the car has been in a crash it looks like there's a glitch or bug with the game
-multiplayer is awful, I've only had a handful of succesful games as it's pot luck you find one where people are willing to actually race, are at your level or are using similar settings to what you're looking for. Some just have people going up and down the runway part of the top gear track
So after all these flaws you'd think this game is a complete stinker? Well actually when you can finally get past all the loading screens, the menus upon menus upon menus & get a decent car the racing's pretty good. It's clear that this is a serious racing game, it's not as fun as most racing games but it's a lot more challenging. Someone needs to take Kazunori Yamauchi out of the equation for GT6, he's talked about never being happy with his finished product. The problem isn't lack of time to perfect a product, it's that he's out of touch with what makes a good game, he's missing out the fun factor and spending way too much time messing around with fancy menus.
