"Well, that was extremely disappointing. I could have saved my money for Plants vs. Zombies if I had known how this would all go down." That is my initial knee-jerk reaction after completing the final downloadable chapter of Dragon Age, entitled Witch Hunt. It has left a bitter taste in my mouth and I honestly wish to never see Morrigan again.
In Witch Hunt , you can either import an existing character saved game or create a new one. I chose the former, seeing as how I had unfinished business with Morrigan after the climax of the Origins campaign. The plot has you hot on her trail, going first to the only sensible place to look for clues, Flemeth's Hut in the Wilds. Right out of the gate you gain a trusty Mabari hound (who I named Jake, which is incredibly ironic regarding a later character), followed swiftly by the Dalish Elf Warrior Ariane. She too seeks Morrigan, but for different reasons regarding an ancient elven text. Considering this is the only lead you have, you go with Ariane to the Circle of Magi, where you meet the bumbling spellcaster Finn (he's that guy I was talking about earlier... Finn and Jake? Yes!). Unfortunately, as amusing as these characters are, they hold little in the way of depth considering they merely serve as a means to an end and fill up your party. From there you go about conducting research and collecting artifacts and so forth, not unlike much of the regular campaign. Here, however, it seems like more of a distraction in order to milk achievements and play time out of the game. Normally, I would be fine with this if it helped the story along, but much of Witch Hunt's side-questing provided little in the way of satisfaction. The same could be said for its locations, which are just rehashed from Origins and Awakening. Nothing new to see here, folks. Move along, move along. You even fight a frightening new boss monster on your journey, but it's by and large underwhelming. And now for the conclusion. This could change depending on the player and his or her respective play through of the main campaign. For me, being an elf woman, I had become close friends with her and simply sought answers as to why she abandoned me at the Battle of Denerim and disappeared. Her answers were vague to say the least, and there wasn't the slightest bit of closure with her story arc. I'm sure this is intentional, and will likely be touched on in Dragon Age II. Basically, you can either attack her or let her slip into the void. I had no reason to fight her, so I let her go. And that was that. I was supposed to get some cool gear, but I don't think it saved before it jumped to the credits. I will always love Dragon Age , and I consider myself a dedicated fan. Dedicated enough to go along with some lackluster DLC. Part of me wants my $6.99 back, but hey, it's another reason to pick up the game again, right? Like I said, I am a tad bitter over this experience, and hopefully I won't have to deal with Morrigan's shady bullshit in the future. |
