I may be a year late but The Fall seemed like a game I should check out. The game opens up with the ai named Arid crash landing on a backwater planet full of things that will harm her pilot that she is trying to keep alive. Exploring the shadowy halls and caves will lead to picking up a bunch of items like a pistol or ever a tire iron. Using said items on the right location will grant the player with new areas to explore and new twists in the story that'll keep you sticking around for more. The game itself is played from a side view like Monkey Island although instead of a mouse you use Arid's flashlight to examine the environment. Control wise the game feels like it was mapped well to a controller so I never had any issues fighting enemies.
Fighting said enemies is fairly simple. You've got two ways to dodge attacks either by hiding behind cover or cloaking. When the robots give you a chance to shoot it just comes down to pointing and pulling the trigger. Other than a unique boss battle the enemies are never very varied in the way they try to combat Arid. But that should not be the reason you want to play this game. The overall mystery of why Arid has been dumped on a lifeless planet will slowly become apparent. As she keeps going deeper into the installation it'll become apparent that something has gone horrible wrong with the planet. All the answers aren't quite answered in this first episode but it ends on such a high note I don't mind waiting till the next one.
The main negative complain I could see about this game is its length. It took a little bit over 2 hours for me to finish it. Which is a tad short although the episodic nature let me overlook that point. Plus as I noted before the combat just feels like it was placed to give the player a minor change of pace. It rarely does anything interesting with it so I didn't enjoy those sections of gameplay.
In the end The Fall does a lot of intriguing things with the narrative while also having a few low points thanks to the combat. Plus the adventure game parts are done well with answers that make sense compared to having weird combinations of items. If your interested in a adventure game set in a sci fi setting this is the game for you.
