SkyRoads XMAS Special (DOS) - Game Review
After the success of SkyRoads, Bluemoon decided to release another version of their game, a Christmas themed edition called “SkyRoads XMAS Special”. Is it me or did every developer release holiday inspired levels, add-ons or expansions around this time? The core of The SkyRoads XMAS Special are the same. The controls, platform specific power-ups (or downs in some cases) and even the Oxygen and Fuel gauges have returned. While is just a map pack for the fans, it’s still a pretty good addition to SkyRoads.
While the gameplay of SkyRoads has returned, the game features 30 completely new levels, Now with a Christmas theme, the levels colours have moved to the colours of Christmas, having more green, red, and a light blue that represents ice and snow. Also all of the backgrounds have changed to a Christmas theme too, having a fireplace surrounded with presents, a snow level and even a level with fish wearing Santa hats.
The levels in the XMAS Special have ramped up in difficulty, becoming a lot more complex and requiring a lot more concentration, making this more for the veteran players of SkyRoads. This prevented the XMAS Special from being more popular among the fans and prevented new fans from coming in.
There’s not really much to say about this version of SkyRoads. The fact that it has the same game mechanics as the last game means it’s simple and easy to jump into, but a good portion of the levels are just too hard. Overall, this isn’t as fantastic as the original, since it’s a map pack with a reskin, but it isn’t terrible either, since it’s more of the same greatness that the first one was. If you liked SkyRoads, try out the SkyRoads XMAS Special.
NOTE: Like SkyRoads, this is a freeware title, so you can also download it now from Bluemoon’s website for free. However, it takes a trick or two to start playing and requires DOSBOX. Go to the DOSBOX website, download it and read and follow the instructions on the website and in the manual. If you need help, find someone good with computers.
