Translating Duke Nukem to the Gameboy Advance would be pretty much impossible since it's know for having strippers, swearing and violence (see the shrink ray and stepping on your shrunk enemies), everything that gave the game its personality. So when it got its own version on the GBA, the game went the way of the Doom and Wolfenstein 3D ports and removed the ladies and profane language had been taken out and toned down the violence. But the end product, although is what is expected from the standard FPS, is still one of the better additions to the franchise.
As far as the plot is concerned, Duke Nukem has been asked by General Graves (i still have no fucking idea who this guy is, maybe because it's not that important) to investigate Area 51 after reports indicated the hostile infiltration of an alien species. One thing leads to another and you somehow become involved in a plot with alien hybrids and the potential destruction of the Earth's atmosphere. It's the plotline to a cheesy B-movie and unless your into the goofiness that is that sort of thing, you will probably ends up skipping through the text boxes just to get to the gameplay.
Unlike previously mention games, Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, it's not a direct port of Duke Nukem 3D or any other game in the series, instead using a few textures and such from Duke 3D. Graphically, it's one of the best on the system. Unlike the muddy graphics in Doom, it's fairly clean looking and easy to navigate through. It has varied locations, including Area 51, a temple in Egypt, a shopping district in Australia and an orbiting alien spacecraft. The intro and outro sequences are drawn in a 90's comic book style, really standing out.
Many of the weapons and enemies make a return, including the Shotgun, the Freezethrower and the Assault Enforcer, but the game introduces a few new goodies (and baddies) as well, including a Desert Eagle and a Grey, one of the stereotypical aliens threatening the Earth's atmosphere. Ultimately, it changes the gameplay little, but it add some variation. However, the jetpack is missing, probably to make the game less complicated. Because it's a GBA original, the developer has treated it as such. The controls are simple, including strafing, jumping and shooting keep to one or two keys, with the map accessible through the pause menu.
While the game would take several hours to complete, the game also features hidden levels for you to find, adding some replayability for the game. If the single player is not enough for you, there is a multiplayer feature for up to 4 players (requiring multiple copies of the game). This allows for some simple Deathmatch play for you and 3 of your friends. Probably the best part of the game (in my opinion) are the voice samples taken from Duke Nukem 3D and the odd one-liners, so you can at least semi-enjoy the Duke Nukem the character you've come to know and love.
While there are a few fantastic First Person Shooters for the Gameboy, this one is ever so slightly above most of those because it's an original entry into a franchise instead of a port and takes what the platform can do in stride. This is a recommended title to those who are in dire need for simple FPS games on the road.
The Good:
+One of the best FPS games on the GBA, using the controls to the games advantage.
+The game looks great, if slightly muddy at times.
+Original game and not just a port
The Bad:
-No swearing, tits or gore, if your into that.
