Lets be clear, Lucidity is not for everyone. It can be slow, frustrating, and cumbersome. Beneath it's flaws however, lies an artistic masterpiece that I can see being enjoyed by many.
Lucidity takes our young heroine Sofi through the land of her dreams, where her hopes and fears make up the environment. However, you have no direct control over Sofi herself as she walks from left to right on a two dimensional plane. Instead, you control her by dropping one of 5 random objects in her path- a fan, staircase, wood plank, bomb, and slingshot.
Imagine it as a combination of Mario and Tetris. The two genres don't always mix perfectly however. Platforming usually relies on precision. With the randomness of not being able to choose what pieces you get to place in front of Sophie, sometimes there is just no way out of a bad situation with the pieces given to you.
Sofi walks along at a fairly brisk pace and when trying to collect all of the fireflies for achievements, I often found myself scrambling to clear a path for her. When the system clicks just right and you are whipping her through the beautiful environments on an improvised path the game feels great. When you are stuck wasting useless pieces to try and draw the only one that can help you however... not so much.
The story itself should take an average player a short 3-4 hours to complete. Where the game shines however is in the collection of fireflies and earning achievements. Trying to get Sofi to an out of the way spot with randomly generated pieces can be very frustrating, and very rewarding. They do however showcase how much effort went in to the level design which could easily be missed if your only goal was to get to the end of each stage.
I really cannot gush enough about this games artistic presentation. I found the story to be heart touching, the visual style to always be a treat and the music to provide a calming sometimes melancholy sound environment.
If you require precise fast paced action, this game probably isn't for you. If you like sometimes frantic puzzle games (especially Tetris) and can appreciate an artistic experience with some gameplay rough spots, I can easily recommend Lucidity.
