Review of a game you most likely don't care of
Seeing as there are no reviews for this game I might as well start my long due reviewing career with this title. Game is called Solitaire DS in the Europe by the way.
Reason why I love Nintendo DS so much is the fact that the game selection is really wide. Granted there is lot's of showelware for the system as well, too much actually. This game could have been categorized as one those of those as well. The mandatory solitaire game for Nintendo's handheld where the touch screen is must. Except that this is actually a good game. OK it is still a collection of Solitaire games but if you are fan of card games this will be ideal for you.
The Solitaire DS consists of 101 different types of solitaire games. These categorized further in to speed/ /types. Game gives you nice statistics of each game played game by using the Select button in the selection screen and in game. This will show you how many games you played for one specific solitaire and how many games you've beaten. You also get a short description of the type of the solitaire chance/speed and the % probability of beating it.
There seems to be some sort of multiplayer function built in but I didn't have possibility to test and don’t really see why you need such.
This is naturally not like the usual game review where graphics sound and storyline is judged. It is a card game after all. But to write about something, here is the quick summary of these:
The graphics, of what there is is nice and clear. Lower screen is used for your table and cards. Upper screen is just for the stats. You get to select your table and card deck from different patterns and backgrounds.
Sound consists of card dealing effects and such + vast selection of muzak styled midi tunes. Exciting huh? Both can be turned of individually of course and the music will be.
Game play is simple with the stylus where you drag the cards to correct deck. Normal d-pad and buttons can be used as quick buttons as well; I didn’t bother with this since the stylus is ideal for this game. Difficulty level of course varies a lot if the solitaire you are playing is a chance or calculation based. Needles to say, this is a game you won’t beat.
Few other functions that should be mentioned are, you get one save slot. Meaning you can save the game where ever and get back to it later on. Save works as a save state instead of traditional save slot which is more ideal for such type game. Meaning the saving is instant and there is no need to look for the save function. Only drawback is that there is only one such slot.
Changes are great that you don't know how to play most of these solitaires without a manual and that's where the games help function aid's you naturally explaining the rules. What I missed here was a brief description of origin of each game. Like mentioning that Bonaparte solitaire is allegedly something Napoleon himself played in his capture.
Anyway, this might have come out as more of product description than a review but this is a solid solitaire collection. I am aware how shallow it must sound nitpicking a £10 solitaire game. Minus points come from the soundtrack, you know that no one is going to listen to it, why bother with it? Other fact would be to have more details around solitaire games like the origin to start with, ok the last point might be for the freaks who actually like solitaire games like me, but at least this is good effort and will keep you busy..
