Big Brain Wolf is an indie puzzle/adventure game available on Steam. Theme in the game revolves around classical fairytale's as the title indicate. Player is in control of an genie in training, who also happens to be a wolf. And is ridiculed by his wolf community for being a vegetarian. Action takes place on the wolf trying get her mother free. Who has been framed for an murder. Catching the real perpetrator and gaining some credit with the wolf community end up being his objectives as well. This all is done by solving a number of different puzzles given by the genie teacher that loosely relates to different characters/items encountered.

Weird scene in a local Disco

Big Brain Wolf is presented in a traditional point & click fashion. IE. 2D. The backgrounds consist of number of interactive items that player need to click in order to trigger a puzzle or continue the story line. Simple selection of dialogue can be done with certain characters as well. The dialogue presented with choices, none of these having any impact on the story. Other than some of these are mandatory to progress the linear story. Opposite to most point and click games there is no inventory.

Game is divided into 5 chapters with 50+ puzzles a. Puzzles being the main thing of the game. I found myself being a slightly disappointed on the quality. Anyone who has played number of puzzles or adventure games have surely seen majority of these before. So yes, big check for the matchstick or the Tower of Hanoi puzzles. The latter even starts to repeat itself. Only difference here is to, say Layton is the amount of chess puzzles. Own chess skills being bit rusty, it would have been nice to have a reminder on each of the pieces moves. Overall more polish could have been used in the puzzle. Better descriptions and better hit detection on the letter boxes.

Love interest

Presentation and the theme of the game heavily relies on the classical fairytale such as three little pigs, Pinocchio and Tom Thumb. The characters wolf meets are all fairytale characters with a non stereotype personality which is really interesting twist. The game is presented in colourful 2D backgrounds with only couple of animated items/things. Wolf's apathetic walking when clicking around might get bit tiresome after a while as well. Music is light jazzy soundtrack looping on background. Only voiced dialogue is presented on the tutorial part.

Best part of the game no doubt is the writing. The story is surprisingly elaborate in the end. The dialogue is filled with jokes and on several occasions is really funny. This consisting of lot of references to popular media.

If you are fan of either of the game types mentioned in the subject then this is worth checking out. Puzzles not the most exiting or fun. At least the presentation is relatively solid and the writing is funny.
