Here is my attempt of reviewing a 30 year old game that only has two colours and no story what so ever. Red Baron is of course the nickname for a German fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen. Who was World War I pilot that is known for his 80 air kills in a simple and crude Fokker planes. Red Baron was arcade title from 1980 that utilizes vector graphics in mono-graphic colors. Not too different Battlezone.
You are thrown directly to the action the screen shown in cool black and blue color. Objects in the world are occasional mountain and enemies. Which both will kill you if crashed on naturally. Game will ramp up on difficulty in form of enemies start to shoot at you on increasing interval. Well mountains wont shoot back. You are armed with machine gun that has unlimited ammo but will overheat if used constantly. Enemy roster besides the fierce mountains consists of single bi-planes, group of bi-planes, zeppelins and different turret towers/tanks. Your plane has no throttle, maps or radars. You control the plane freely and scenery will change accordingly. In reality this just a trick of simple mountain scenery being drawn according to which direction you are flying.
Despite the sleek look the game has, there isn't too much to write about this. The original game had a adaptive difficulty which adjusted the difficulty based on recent average scores. After hours of playing this game I can not say I noticed any of in this Game Room version. Red Baron is still a hard game and one the hooks for sure is the leaderboard scores and the Game Room challenges and friend challenges. Especially on the Survivalist challenge. You would think it is easy to last for 5min or 10mins.
I really like this game although there isn't much to like. Or not to like for that matter. 30 years ago this was probably a impressive game. Still good to see and to be able to play such games in a modern hardware
