Batman is one of the most well-known super-heroes of all-time, but definitely not because of his video games. Let’s face it, the only one that was halfway decent was the freakin’ LEGO game. Now, little-known developer Rocksteady Studios has stepped up to the challenge of creating a good Batman. Not only did they succeed, they made one of the best games of the console generation thus far, Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Pros:
- Gameplay that makes you feel like you really are the Dark Knight
- Flashy combat that is easy to learn, but hard to master
- Stealth moments that require you to think and use tactics like the Caped Crusader himself
- Investigating and puzzle-solving establish Batman’s roles as “the World’s Greatest Detective”
- Boss battles that fit the characters and never seem like they don’t fit with the fiction
- The Asylum itself is wonderfully realized and drips with atmosphere no matter where you go
- Beautiful art direction that makes you feel like your in the Batman universe
- Controls are well-tuned and accessible
- Mind-blowing moments that will leave your jaw on the floor
- Dark and gritty plotline that would be at home in the comics
- Challenge rooms are addictive and worth replaying
- The numerous Riddler trophies are all fun and challenging to find
- Great use of some of Gotham’s most notorious super-villains
- Free Joker DLC changes the way you approach the challenge rooms (only on PS3)
Cons:
- Some may find the fighting too simple
- AI should be much less stupid for stealth gameplay
- Too few super-villains considering how many have appeared in the comics
- Enemy models are recycled constantly
- Final boss is a major disappointment
You owe it to yourself to play Batman: Arkham Asylum. If you’re a fan of games, it is a necessary addition to your collection. If you’re a fan of the comics, that’s all the more reason to pickup this love letter to fans around the world.
