Bioshock is a success in every sense of the word. Graphically, of course it's beautiful beyond description and creepy as all get out; much like discovering those rumors about Jessica Alba's health may be true. Haha!
Critically it's incredible: everything from mechanics to gameplay...implementation to innovation...execution to immersion; it's all here and pulled off perfectly. Now yeah, if you have the opportunity play it on pc then do so...I mean it's a shooter and they're reaction time will always be better than a console and controller. But aside from that, it really is an epic flawless experience.
But ya want critiques? Alright- the slide puzzle hack mechanic is annoying. Sure it adds tension, since if you screw up a hack you get physically injured, but I honestly don't remember the last vending machine that punched me in the face when i tried to shake it and make a snickers bar fall without paying. It's just a noticeable blight on the face of such a fine construct that is Bioshock.
The ambience is this games' bread and butter, and Rapture is so much more a character than it is a city. That said I guess I expected a bit more from the level design. Some stuff was unbelievably cool, and some levels felt like the b-team designers had come off an all-weekend bender to throw it together before deadline.
Also I didn't much care for having to change out ammo real time on the fly so I could use anti-personnel rounds for scud-head splicer b, just to save me a few bullets. I get why it's in there, but it's tedious.
So! Those minor grievances aside, Bioshock is a stellar shooter, with a wonderfully incidious story and is a morality play on a level gamers haven't seen before.
If you're not going to play this game, you should at least watch it, and absorb the wonderful...ness! Heh!
