Spider-Man 2 for the PC is a game that really sticks with you. Kind of like a spider-web.
Except spider-webs aren't broken, buggy (or are they?), overly simple, obviously low-budget, or tedious. Spider-Man 2 definitely is.
The plot is completely nonsensical. The first cut-scene you see involves Spider-Man witnessing the birth of Doctor Octopus. Immediately after, you are placed in a generic city block (no Doc Ock in site) in order to play the game's tutorial. Sadly, this tutorial stage is probably the most enjoyable portion of the entire game, mostly because of Bruce Campbell's voice-over.
It all goes downhill from there. Stupidly simple boss fights (the game actually shows you exactly what you need to do before letting you actually go at it) still manage to be frustrating thanks to strange bugs, and are never engaging. Other aspects of the game are just as bad. Instead of having full control over Spider-Man's famous web-slinging ability, large web-shaped icons in the sky dictate where you can go. Add to this restriction the fact that you aren't allowed to get on the roof of about 80% of the game's buildings and getting around is nowhere the near the fun it should be. The combat follows the "Keep it simple, stupid" philosophy and plays like Diablo. Hammering on the left mouse button is pretty much all you need to do.
The graphics are pretty average for the time, and sound is nothing special as well. The voice acting in the cut-scenes is usually pretty bad, with the most wooden acting from Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst I've ever heard.
Just avoid this game. At. All. Costs.
