Deadly Premonition at first glance looks like an awful game. The graphics are dated, the sound effects are hilariously bad, and the 'walking tank' controls are clunky. The rational person inside of me makes me want to hate this game. For a game as busted as this, I was surprised to find that I couldn't stop playing it. I was becoming attracted to the characters and the story, and even began finding silver linings in all of the game's flaws. Even though the graphics are terrible, the character models look pretty good, and the direction and presentation of the cutscenes are top notch. The sound effects are hilariously bad, but in a humorous, B movie way which adds to the game's atmosphere. Even the game's clunky controls are serviceable.

The best thing I can say about the superficial qualities of Deadly Premonition is that they are consistently mediocre, and much of this has to do with the game's tiny budget. Let's however, discuss the qualities of the game that really matter. The story, the characters, and the atmosphere. All of these qualities in Deadly Premonition are some of the best in the industry. I connected with the characters and the world like I rarely do. It is completely irrational of me, but Deadly Premonition is one of the best experiences I have ever had with a game. I laughed at moments, shed a tear, and often did so in immediate succession in what is an emotional roller coaster that sucks you in.

Deadly Premonition isn't for everyone. But those who can put up with the game's many flaws will be rewarded with one of the best games ever made. Isn't that right Zach?
