Alright guys, picture this: The peeps who made Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion make a game very similar that but set it in post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. Well, welcome to the world of Fallout 3, a game just like I described it in the previous sentence. Coming into this game a huge Oblivion fan, I was expecting huge world to explore with seemingly endless quests and much fun to be had. And, I am happy to say Fallout 3 fulfilled those expectations and even usurped them numerous times.
Pros:
- There's so much to do! Seriously, I have logged in a good 167 hours of gameplay and still haven't completed everything this game has to offer, including the DLC.
- VATS system makes every combat situation cinematic and deliciously gory.
- Tons of variety when it comes to combat, from how you approach a situation to the weapons you use.
- Dude, Liam Neeson's your Dad!
- Awesome perk system makes leveling up even more rewarding and is varied to appeal to many game styles.
- engrossing world offers a lot of variety of locations to explore and certainly makes you feel you're traveling through a wasteland. Searching through landmark buildings like the Capital Building and the U.S. History Museum was fantastic, especially considering the fact I had just gotten back from a trip to D.C. touring these sites and I could now play through them all wrecked and dilapidated. Good times, good times.
- Characters are often engaging and entertaining with their own personalities and traits.
Cons:
- Pretty anti-climactic ending (fixed with Broken Steel).
- Can't continue playing after completing main quest (again, fixed with Broken Steel).
- Some minor technical issues, including the occasional slowdown and the rare crashing.
- Combat outside of VATS seems a little weak and inconsistent at times.
I have to say this is one of my favorite games of all time; and the great thing is is that I'm still not 100% done with it, so I'm still having fun! I love games that have a lot to offer, and Fallout 3 is definitely has A LOT to offer. The game certainly has its issues, but Fallout 3's overall package gives you a whole lot more of exploratory fun and reason to continue playing that give you more bang for your buck.
