Dead Space is an action horror third person shooter from EA developed by Visceral games. Allot of people put Dead Space in the survival horror category. I feel that is untrue, survival horror games are typically allot slower paced than Deadspace.

In Deadspace you follow Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent out to repair a mining ship which has sent out a distress call. On arrival the crew of the repair ship soon realise that something isn’t quite right (I know bit of a gaming clique, mining ship, aliens, and lone hero. I smell doom). Yepp like I said, you get jumped by aliens pretty quickly. Soon enough you find yourself a weapon. This is where Deadspace differs from games like doom because it’s not a generic hand gun that you find; it’s actually a mining tool. That right the developers actually thought this though. Why would there be random hand guns on a mining vessel? There wouldn’t so you get a mining tool a cutter to be specific. I love that plus I love the gun it is amazing and actually I used it for the majority of the game.
I think I mentioned earlier, Deadspace is a third person shooter at its core. But where it differs to other shooters of the genre is where you shoot. Headshots are not an easy way out with this game, like many others. To kill the necromorphs (Deadspace’s alien enemies) you have to amputate or decapitate them. With many though just cutting off their heads will not kill them. My tactic seems to be 2 to the legs and 2 to the arms. Works a treat. Deadspace is quite linear in design, basically you get on a tram to a section follow one or 2 objectives and then back to the tram to the next section of the ship. Although there are many side rooms to pick up ammo and nodes. Nodes are used, to upgrade your guns. Every so often you will come across a work bench which lets you use your nodes to upgrade your weapons with a branching tree of updates. There are also stores dotted around the ship where you can buy ammo and health packs and also upgrade your suit. The action in the game is broken up pretty nicely in many different ways, there are some simple puzzles, zero gravity sections where you have to jump around till you get where you need to and sections where the air is sucked from the area in which you have to get to your destination before Isaac’s suits air supply runs out. There are also many quiet sections in the game that breaks up the action quite nicely. It makes parts extremely eerie waiting for something to happen and sometimes nothing actually ever happens. It leaves you on the edge of you seat heart thumping in anticipation.
Deadspace is a great game, I am really wondering why I didn’t play it sooner. Although it can be really linear at times it always keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next.

Thumbs Up.x
