... and she was a hermaphrodite with hundreds of animal and human children. Sounds great, am I right? Yes. I am right. And it doesn't just sound great, it is great.
Zeno Clash brings a strong narrative style and a simple yet hard to grasp melee combat system in a beautiful, yet surreal and dark world. The game runs on the source engine, and in my personal opinion, is the best looking game to ever do so.
The combat system is fairly simple. You can punch, kick, block and dodge aswell as pick up guns, which are also incredibly weird. The guns do play a fairly big part as in between the huge street brawls there are sequences which require the use of guns to kill local hostile wildlife or shoot some insane hunter off of the back of a giant swordfish. The melee is where the combat shines though. It's difficult to grasp, and it took me about an hour to get through the first fight because they just kept destroying me. Once you pick it up though, you'll have a blast.
You take the role of the main character, Ghat, and you're on the run from your brethren in the Hastedom, a large city in the world of Zenoizik. You see, you killed the Father-Mother, which is a huge bird slash man who gave birth to hundreds of children on his own. These children have a maternal and a paternal bond with this creature thing, and when Ghat kills it. They are pretty pissed.
The story isn't just where the game ends though. On top of this, you have 8 levels of challenge mode, each with 5 different challenges inside them (obviously, that makes 42 different challenges) 5 of the levels invovle you working up a tower (Levels 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 which were included in the first DLC) and then 3 more levels which involve you getting deeper into a pit (Levels -1, -2 and -3.) You are timed while you are completing the challenge, and when you are done your time is added to a leaderboard of you, your friends and everyone in the groups you are in. This can make for some very competitve gameplay trying to hit the top of the leaderboard.
My only problem with the game is the lack of multiplayer. I'm usually not someone who cares about this kind of thing but with the fighting system that they have it seems like a 1 v 1 or a free for all would've been a great thing to include and would've complimented the single player campaign very well.
