The Lovecraftian Horror game series, aptly titled Alone in the Dark had me in a tight grasp during my young adulthood, besides introducing me to HP Lovecraft it kept me at the edge of my seat for hours at a time.
The second part sees Edward Carnby's return to the haunted mansion Derceto. This time, the game features more polished controls and a way deeper and utterly more disturbing storyline, featuring an evil clown *shiver*.
Alone in the Dark's engine is virtually the same as the first game apart from some technical recalibrations. Cinematic camera angles conjure the mood of a b-movie horror fest unfolding before your very eyes. The game mixed "action" and fight sequences with the odd puzzle, which are very simple and inventory base. The game drops more clues than a box of the boardgame clue and if you read all the books and letters lying around the house, you cannot really go wrong. Yet, beating the game is half the fun, the rest lies in the immersion and the creepy atmosphere. The sound effects made my skin crawl every time.
A great and atmospheric horror game. They don't make 'em like this anymore
