The Simpsons isn’t exactly a franchise that brings good games. If you think retrospectively, the track record definitely shows that there are more bad games than good games. In 1992, The Simpsons: Bart’s Nightmare hit the SNES.
The premise of The Simpsons: Bart’s Nightmare is simple; you are Bart Simpson, you fall asleep doing your homework and you have to traverse your nightmares in order to collect your homework with the aim of getting a good grade.
Developed by Sculptured Software, the game consists of an Evergreen Terrace hub world which you use to access a bunch of mini games. These mini games range from entering Bart’s bloodstream to a superman-esque shoot ‘em up. Though the mini games vary, there is one common thread throughout all of them; they are difficult as all hell. I feel like I am pretty decent at the game. There isn’t anything hard to grasp, however, the enemies are cheap and kill you even when you are on a good run. Also, bosses are repeated in a weird fashion that makes the levels stretch way too long.
If you are a fan of The Simpsons, then The Simpsons: Bart’s Nightmare actually provides some good fan service. The game looks pretty and showcases a bunch of the classic characters from the show such as Principle Skinner and Barney Gumble. On top of this, the music in the game is actually pretty catchy and well put together.
However, pretty graphics and a decent musical output cannot save this game from being another piece of shit in the long line of smelly The Simpsons turds. In conclusion, while The Simpsons: Bart’s Nightmare looks nice, has great music and doesn’t control that badly, the game design and level design is downright awful and as a result of this, the difficulty of the game is unforgivable, even with practise.
