Story/Gameplay
A fictional take on WW1, Frank Woodruff and Vladamir Farnsworth were good friends turned into mortal enemies when a mysterious signal came through there radio called the "broadcast" changing there lives forever. Frank became paralyzed from the neck down from the broadcast. While Vlad went nutty and created these monsters called the "Tubes" to enslave the world and spread the glorious sounds of the broadcast. To counter act the villainous Vlad and his army of tubes, Frank creates the "Trench" a weapon wielding giant mech. Long story short kill Vladamir and his tubes. The gameplay is a mix of third person shooter and tower defense. There is a fantastic loot system ala Diablo or Borderlands in the game. You can customize your Trench with different weapon's the likes of machine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, grenade launchers and artillery cannons. Also you are able to customize the Trench its self like the legs, size and color. There are four marines to choose from but really they're all the same just cosmetic differences and voices. The really clever customizable part is making your marine as cool or crazy looking as you want.
Graphics/Sound
As this is a downloadable game it looks great. Double Fine always in my eye's make very colorful games. Double Fine is one of those company's that just has that flavor and humor that they excel at. That also applies to the audio in this game. The voice acting is so good especially Farnsworth the crazy shit he spouts out is well... crazy but somewhat sincere. The sound effect's of the guns sound like they should but the reloading audio is the one that I noticed the most and not just because I was reloading alot.
Multiplayer
Throughout the entire campaign is four player co-op. This game would have gotten a 5/5 if I played it with friends but I blew through the whole game solo, that being said playing this game with people that aren't on your friends list is still great fun cause the gameplay doesn't really allow you to fuck it up too much. There is a great wave based survival mode as well where the more waves you complete the better loot you can receive.
Is this game any fun
Like I said up in the multiplayer section this game is made for co-op but if you do play this game solo it's still a ton of fun. Even playing this game with complete strangers is a groovy time. The game is $15 and I think it is a steal for a well made game. Double Fine has a great track record and this is another medal on they're belt.
Beer of the Review
This is a new section that I decided to put in.... Well I am the Micro Brew Gamer so fuck it. This is one of my go to beers lately and while I was playing this game and finishing up the Darkness 2, Boulder Beer's Mojo IPA is a great and fairly affordable bomber/6 pack. I love my hops in the beer's I drink and this one is hoppy but not over powering. The beer comes from the Boulder Beer Company in my home town of Boulder CO. I don't know for sure if this beer is in other states but check it out if you ever have the chance. www.boulderbeer.com
