Resistance 2 is a fun fps that you probably will not remember, you won't find any memorable characters or ground breaking innovations here but it's a varied and colourful game with the co-op mode being the highlight that will keep your attention until the credits roll. The game starts where the first one ended, you're picked up by a bunch of Helghan looking fellows who take for a ride in their chopper to Iceland for some reason but the aliens, called the Chimera, by the way, shoot you down and you go through a short tutorial where you slay a big spider robot and then get a brief confrontation with the end boss, a jellyfish with a massive tumor and a face on the tumor (I don't know if that's an accurate description but that's how I remember him) who bores you with some silly poetry. From then on, it's back home to America where you wake up after having some sort of surgery, apparently your generic main character has some kind of alien infection, an uninspired twist to the uninspired premise.
The level design is varied (minus the awful repeated art in the spaceship levels) but it starts on a linear note and ends that way, the end level should be a bit more memorable, like HL2: EP2 for example. The weapons are great, my favorite was the magnum which after you have fired, can press the alternative fire button (R2) to make an explosion, glee! Honourable mentions goes to the sniper rifles, especially the one that shoots that thing that electrocutes people, that's cool. However, this game is so cliche, which I know now is a very cliche thing to say in a review about a game with humans fighting aliens, what was I expecting, right? But come on, alien pods? Can we get any more blatant here? The boss fights are in design, pretty bad, but you'll probably still enjoy them regardless. Most of them pit you against a supersize Chimera and you'll basically have to shoot them with the rocket launcher or weird blue laser rocket launcher the right amount of times with the given time limits, in that sense they're very linear but they're still fun.
On the multiplayer side of things, you've got the 60 player fragfests and the 8 player class based co-op campaign. The competitive multiplayer is somewhat forgettable, it pulls of the 30 vs 30 pretty well so it doesn't feel that chaotic but it is somewhat repetitive and it doesn't do anything special enough to drag you away from Halo or Call of Duty for more than a brief peroid. Finally the co-op. It's really good, it has it's own campaign where eight players can team up as either the self-explanatory medic, the ammo dispensing, sniper weidling spec ops or the soldier with a huge gatling gun that doubles up as a shield. You'll want to play this on the harder modes, preferably with a headset because you'll need it and that will get you working together. Give this game a try as long as your standards aren't to high. See how I almost ended on a rhyme there?
