Rage2011

3 out of 5 stars

I'm one of those people that can turn on a game if the ending is terrible. Same for movies. If it's good for the first 80% and then just falls apart, I'm going to look back and hate the whole experience. I don't hate Rage, partly because the story was never engaging to begin with. But it looks great, and I for one really had a lot of fun with the shooting and the simple crafting system. Shooting shit in Rage is a…

Gears of War 32011

4 out of 5 stars

This is a beautiful looking game that plays great. The combat is honed to the Gears flavor of perfection. The scenes are bright and crisp and engaging in a way that exceed the previous two games by far. Production values all around are excellent. And I really kind of hated it. I found the storytelling - that is, the admixture of what you do in the game and what happens in the plot - to be really off. If you…

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine2011

4 out of 5 stars

I had a ton of fun with this game - it looks good, plays well, sounds great, and moves right along. It's not mind-blowing or revolutionary, but it does have some nice additions to the third-person shooter formula like the heal-by-killing system and the jump pack implementation. I've even found myself playing the multiplayer a lot, which isn't normally my thing. But really this game clicked for me because of the…

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood2009

3 out of 5 stars

This game is kind of all over the map. There are parts the work really well, other parts that almost work well, and large chunks where it falls flat on its face. I agree with Jeff's review that the story is one of the game's strongest points, but I still found it deeply flawed in many respects. I'm fine with having unlikable characters, but in the beginning I was supposed to sympathize with the two brothers -…

Infernal2007

1 out of 5 stars

This is the worst shooter I've played in years. The story strains to be edgy and comes off feeling overstuffed and pretentious. It's not helped by the really atrocious voice acting. These would be easier to ignore if the game play was fun, but it's an awkward, floaty shooter that manages to be both easy and yet frustrating feeling at the same time. Add in the lamest teleportation power in gaming - you can teleport…

The Secret of Monkey Island1990

4 out of 5 stars

It's a terrible tragedy that I never played this game before. Really, at 37 I'm certainly old enough, and I've been playing games since my Apple IIC days in 6th grade, so there's no good excuse. I chalk it up to a traumatic King's Quest experience, the less said about, the better... All I need and want to say is that this game has left me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. Games just don't have that effect on…

Treasure World2009

3 out of 5 stars

I have to admit that I've changed my driving habits because of this game. Treasure World uses the wi-fi antenna on the DS to scan for hotspots and convert them into "stars" which then give you treasure. That treasure takes the form of costume pieces and scenery for the little sandbox game that comprises the rest of Treasure World. There's really not much more to it than that, and putting your little robot in…
